The Sanskrit term yoga derives from the root yuj, meaning "to control", "to yoke", or "to unite". Common meanings include "joining" or "uniting", and related ideas such as "union" and "conjunction". A Sanskrit lexicon gives us five meanings of the word yoga and each of them can be seen as a characteristic of Yoga.
In the practice of Yoga we try to reach the goal of understanding our own self through meditation, which is an intelligent way of doing things and will be a protection against the suffering in life. This is a pointed way of summarising the different layers yoga can provide. In our practice we link first body and mind, then we connect our inside world with the outside world and finally we try to unit our consciousness with the unconsciousness. To achieve this union it is necessary to get the ever busy mind and our instincts under control. We need to remove unnecessary stimuli and clutter that get in the way of clarity. Ashtanga Yoga presents different tools to reach this goal. Ashta means eight and the Yoga Sutras describe the 8-folded path of Ashtanga Yoga:
