Yoga - an introduction |

The following manuscript is an overview about Yoga for modern eyes and with a scientific approach. The philosophy is based on The Yoga Sutras written by the Indian sage Patanjali. Ashtanga yoga is usually accounted as a body-centred form, because its main guru in the last half century, the Indian master Pattabhi Jois, focused his teaching on the Primary Series, which is a strenuous physical exercise. Breathing exercises, meditation or philosophical background are neglected in what I will call Modern Ashtanga Yoga. I drive the term Classical Ashtanga Yoga from the American scientist Georg Feuerstein, who wrote several books about the Yoga Sutras, which is the essential text on Ashtanga Yoga. He calls it Classical Yoga, but I find Classical Ashtanga Yoga a more accurate name. It is a non-religious yoga style that includes beside physical exercise also breathing techniques, ethic and morals rules and meditation. It aims for absolute self-realization, teaches thoughtfulness and Self-awareness and transforms the human being in a happier and better person.Any kind of feedback, correction and remarks are welcome to improve this text.
